Author Ernest Gaines reflects on 'Miss Jane Pittman'
NPR's Scott Simon talks with Ernest J. Gaines, author of The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. The TV film based on the novel won nine Emmy awards, and is out on DVD. Gaines talks about the River Lake plantation in Pointe Coupée Parish, La., the setting for most of his fiction. At age 9 he picked cotton in the plantation fields. Now he owns some of the land.
