Nestled in the historic Shreveport neighborhood of South Highlands, the R. W. Norton Art Gallery has long stood as a community beacon of art, culture, and serenity. But every spring, something even more extraordinary happens. The manicured lawns and wooded paths erupt into a riot of color and fragrance as thousands of azaleas burst into bloom. This breathtaking transformation is what gave birth to BLOOM!, the museum’s annual juried art exhibition and floral celebration—now one of North Louisiana’s most anticipated seasonal events. And in 2026, BLOOM! marks its tenth anniversary, and the museum’s sixtieth.
The story of BLOOM! began modestly in 2015. Inspired by the natural beauty of the museum’s forty-acre botanical gardens and its eclectic permanent art collection, the Norton team envisioned an exhibition celebrating the convergence of the two. That first year, BLOOM! featured a handful of local artists, whose work was inspired by flowering plants. Word spread quickly. Visitors came not only for the gardens, but for beautiful works hanging in the exhibition.
Each year since, BLOOM! has grown both organically and ambitiously. By its fourth anniversary, this exhibition went national, attracting submissions from hundreds of artists across the United States. By the fifth year, the exhibition went international. This year, artists from nineteen countries around the world submitting pieces for consideration. The exhibition brings together a dynamic mix of talent, placing local, national, and international artists’ work in conversation with masterpieces by Mary Cassatt, Auguste Rodin, Frederic Remington, Edgar Degas, and others.
Celebrating this decade of BLOOM!, the Norton has special events planned to accompany the exhibition, including public tours, garden walks, free movies on the lawn, live music among the azaleas, and interactive activities for families. BLOOM! continues to reflect the ideals that started it—creativity, legacy, and renewal.
The R.W. Norton Art Gallery has always championed the idea that art should be alive, accessible, and intimately tied and relevant to the world around it. BLOOM! exemplifies this vision—an evolving exhibit that blurs the line between garden and gallery, a celebration of spring, a tribute to creativity, community, and the power of beauty to bring people together. Ten years on, it’s more than an exhibition. It’s a tradition in full bloom.
