In New Orleans, king cake is a Carnival tradition. Decorated with purple, green, and gold sugar, often with fruit or cream fillings, king cake is served throughout the Carnival season, from Twelfth Night (January 6) until Mardi Gras, the day before Ash Wednesday. A plastic baby (such as the one in the center of this cake) is hidden inside, and the person who receives the slice with the baby is king or queen of the party—and is usually obligated to provide the next king cake.
