James Michalopoulos practices painting much as a New Orleans musician performs jazz. “I allow the day to tell me which way to go,” he says. “I go into my studio with an open mind.” The impressions left by his palette knife, the scrapes and swirls of color, communicate the vitality he feels in the city’s oldest neighborhoods.
