Zydeco

Louisiana State Museum

An accordion player, 1850.

Zydeco is a form of dance music that’s rooted in Black Creole traditions of southwest Louisiana. The accordion and rubboard (known in French as the froittoir) are the lead instruments in zydeco. The drums, electric bass, and guitar provide added rhythm. Sometimes zydeco bands also include saxophone or other horns and the fiddle. Zydeco’s interesting rhythms, French and English lyrics, and wide range of influences make it an important and popular form of music in Louisiana.
