From Whole Cloth

Kelli Scott Kelley

Kelli Scott Kelley, Angel Trumpet, 2021. Acrylic on repurposed linen.

Baton Rouge artist Kelli Scott Kelley has painted on salvaged domestic linens since 2010. She writes, “These fabrics, often hand-stitched by the original owners and aged with use, hold stories and histories, offering inspiration and visual breadcrumbs. In addition, the pretty, feminine cloths serve to juxtapose the sometimes-dark imagery.” Angel Trumpet comes from Migrations, a series emerging from Kelley’s anxiety about world events; solitary figures, like the flower-woman here, seek refuge from chaos and rising waters.
