"Bamboula"
The sheet music for Louis Moreau Gottschalk’s piano fantasy “Bamboula,” published in Paris in 1849, was dedicated to his friend Queen Isabelle II of Spain. Gottschalk’s composition was supposed to evoke the African dances in New Orleans’s Congo Square; modern musicologists identify the tune as derived from Louisiana Creole folk songs.
