Albert George Rieker became one of the most notable sculptors in the United States after his membership in the all-male New Orleans Art League provided an exhibition venue for his plaster-cast Neoclassical friezes. Rieker’s statue of Jean Baptiste, Sieur de Bienville, commissioned by Governor Huey P. Long in 1931 for the new Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge remains one of his most enduring contributions. Rieker’s other notable works include a plaster cast bust of Governor Long that was unveiled in 1940 (now housed in the Ogden Museum of Southern Art) and two friezes for the War Memorial Building in Jackson, Mississippi.
