Born in Bilbao in the Basque Country of Spain in 1938, José-María Cundín is one of few remaining pioneers of the Spanish Avant Garde movement often associated with Picasso, Dalí, and Miró. With his multi-faceted art practice that has spanned over fifty years, Cundín uses bold and colorful abstractions frequently depicting tales of whimsy, or satirizing contemporary politics, in a style of oil painting blending freedom and structure he calls “plasticity.” Cundín has been a resident of Louisiana since the early 1960s. His home and studio are currently based in the Village of Folsom in St. Tammany Parish, and his paintings and sculptures are on display in private collections and museums across Europe and the United States.
