Advertisement for Gottschalk's Farewell Concerts in America
This poster advertising Louis Moreau Gottschalk's 1865 farewell US tour prominently features the "Chickering" brand name of the pianos that traveled with him. When Gottschalk's first US tour in 1853 was losing money, piano maker Jonas Chickering came to his financial rescue. Gottschalk played nothing but Chickering pianos for the rest of his career—and received a percentage on all the instruments he sold.
