Frank Relle’s color photographs achieved national and international attention after 2005, particularly the pictures he shot in New Orleans capturing the destruction from the levee failures following Hurricane Katrina. Relle risked run-ins with National Guard patrols in the largely abandoned neighborhoods just after the floodwaters subsided where he set up long-exposure lighting to create “night scape” photographs of the destruction. His method of directing powerful lighting at houses and street scapes at night and in the predawn hours starkly illuminates historic and often blighted structures.
