Degas Painting "Portraits in a Cotton Office, New Orleans, 1872". Schmidt, George (Artist)

George Schmidt’s penchant for the past is found in his oil paintings where he often recasts historic events or famous paintings with his own visual irony and playfulness. He paints nudes and cityscapes, and excels in his signature weaving of expert historical research into his visual narrative. Schmidt’s works exhibit a steadfast devotion to classical expression and scale. In 1999, Schmidt was invited to exhibit his drawing Nick LaRocca at the Corner of Canal and Royal Streets, 1915, and painting The Arrest of Louis Armstrong at the Biennale in Florence, Italy.
