Although originally from New York City, Jean Seidenberg has lived and worked in New Orleans since his early twenties. His oeuvre is broad: from graphite and colored pencil drawings on a variety of media to oil on canvas, casein on chipboard, and egg tempera paintings to bronze, sheet metal, and plaster-cast sculptures, and tile mosaics. In his introduction to Seidenberg’s retrospective catalogue, Michael Sartisky wrote, “What most distinctly characterizes Jean Seidenberg’s art is his profoundly humanistic rendering of the human form… In his paintings, sometimes the human form is merely itself a canvas for the artist’s own judgment and commentary-wielding pigment and pose as an emotional lens literally to frame and form his subjects.”
