New Orleans photographer Eugene Delcroix (1891–1967) spent periods of his childhood on Grand Isle. An oasis of coastline, Grand Isle has served as a vacation destination since the late nineteenth century. During World War II the island was home to Coast Guard and Civil Air Patrol operations. Still, the ease of Louisiana summers allowed these beachgoers a refuge from wartime hardships. Delcroix’s prints can be found at the New Orleans Museum of Art and his negatives can be viewed at the Historic New Orleans Collection.
