Lloyd Hawthorne
Artist Lloyd Hawthorne is best known for his signature painting "Captain Henry Miller Shreve Clearing the Great Raft from the Red River."
Pineville native Lloyd Hawthorne is best known for his signature painting Captain Henry Miller Shreve Clearing the Great Raft from Red River, 1833-1838. Hawthorne meticulously researched congressional records at Louisiana State University for original drawings of the snagboat Shreve designed and used to break the logjam that had for years rendered the Red River impassable for trade. Commissioned by the R.W. Norton Art Gallery in Shreveport and unveiled in 1970, the painting remains on view in that museum. Other works by the artist are on display at the Louisiana Governor’s Mansion in Baton Rouge, Louisiana State University at Shreveport, and the Alexandria Museum of Art.
