The muffuletta is a large, round sandwich made with sesame bread, Genoa salami, ham, mortadella, cheese, and olive salad. Although the muffuletta is made with Italian ingredients, its birthplace is in New Orleans.

It’s believed that the sandwich was first created in 1906 at Central Grocery in the French Quarter by owner and Italian immigrant Salvatore Lupo. The sandwich was called the muffuletta because it was made with a Sicilian-style bread known as muffuletta bread.
